Open letter from Robert Singer to Paolo Sorrentino
“The young pope”

Hello Paolo Sorrentino,
Hello, I first came in contact with your work with “The Great Beauty” and was very moved by the beauty, existentialism, and spirituality of the movie. That’s why I have watched it at least five times.
Now, having just seen “The Young Pope” and “The New Pope” I feel compelled to attempt to explain the impact these series have had on me.
These are hard times for everyone. Covid, violence, climate change and all the other thing which are impacting on our physical and mental well being. I believe that the whole world is suffering from a form of PTSD!
Although I consider myself an agnostic and a marginal Buddhist, I cannot adequately explain how much I was touched by Lenny and the idea of God expressing himself through him. Although I consider myself a non-believer, I was filled with a sense of the miraculous time and time again and I felt that an emptiness within me had been filled.
I feel that both movies are exceptionally timely because everyone is so needy these days and in some ways your work helps to fill us with hope.
I won’t say more other than to thank you for bringing such peace to my heart during this depressing time we are living in.
