About Peter Lindbergh
Peter Lindbergh (born Peter Brodbeck November 23, 1944) is a German fashion photographer and filmmaker.
Lindbergh was born at Leszno (German: Lissa (Wartheland) in Poland and grew up in Duisburg. He left school at the age of 15 and started work as a window dresser at a local department store. After his military service he started taking art classes in Berlin, but left soon after and hitched his way around the South of France, Spain and Moroccco. At the Werkkunstschule Krefeld he joined the painting class of Günther C. Kirchberger and had his first personal art exhibition in 1969, but then he began photography in 1971 as an apprentice to Hans Lux and established himself as an advertising photographer. Following the publication of his first fashion photographs by Stern magazine Lindbergh moved to Paris in 1978, to concentrate on high-fashion, he photographed many top models including Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Stephanie Seymour, Isabella Rossellini, Nastassja Kinski and Tatjana Patitz as well as other projects with Karl Lagerfeld, Daryl Hannah, Giorgio Armani and more. His photographs have been published by magazines such as Stern, Harper's Bazaar and Vogue. He also photographed Céline Dion for her perfume ad.
His first documentary, Models: The Film, with Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Tatjana Patitz, and Stephanie Seymour was shot in New York in 1991.
His first book, "10 Women by Peter Lindbergh", a black and white portfolio of ten top contemporary models was published in 1996 and had sold more than 100,000 copies as of 2008.
In both 1995 and 1997 he was named Best Photographer at the International Fashion Awards in Paris. In 1995 he became an Honorary Member of the German Art Directors Club. In 1996 he received the Raymond Loewy Foundation Award. In 2005 he was awarded the Lucie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Fashion Photography.
He has twice shot the Pirelli calendar, in 1996 and 2002. The latter, which featured actresses instead of models for the first time and was shot on the back lot of Universal Studios , was described by Germaine Greer as "Pirelli's most challenging calendar yet."
He is considered to be one of the world's preeminent fashion photographers, particularly in black and white, and is credited with helping create the supermodel phenomenon of the 1990s. He prefers his model to have minimal make-up and a simple hairstyle. Wim Wenders is an admirer of his work.
