About Garry Cooper
Garry Cooper is an English actor and artistic director of The Milton Rooms in Malton
He was born in Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire on 2 June 1955, to Terry and Nora Cooper. He has one daughter, Ruby, from his first marriage and is engaged to writer Harriet Vyner. After moving to London to study at Drama Center at the age of 16, Garry's first professional role was as one of the brothers in Joseph and his Technicoloured Dreamcoat. In 1979 Garry appeared in the cult film Quadrophenia as Peter (Leslie Ash's boyfriend).
After a recent move back to Yorkshire, Garry and friend Nick Bagnall have taken over The Milton Rooms in Malton, as co-artistic directors in 2011. This began with a staging of A Midsummer Night's Dream. They persuaded writers Jim Cartwright (author of The Rise and Fall of Little Voice) and poet Simon Armitage to create new works for the theatre. He also organised the "Tea and a Tale" program where theatre-goers could listen to a well-known actor reading a short story while enjoying tea and cake.
He has also been involved in the Malton Literature Festival, started in 2010.
He lives in Ryedale, North Yorkshire.
