Letter to Tom Hanks

Open letter from Emma Cabré to Tom Hanks
“T.hanks”

27 July 2025,

Dear Mr. Hanks,
I don’t usually write this kind of letter, but I’ve dreamed of doing so for so long that, this time, I’m going for it.
My name is Emma, I’m 24 years old, and I come from France.
One evening in July 2007, I watched Forrest Gump for the very first time, in my grandfather’s living room, sitting next to my older brother. That night, something changed in me. I discovered a film, a moving story… and I met an actor, a man: Tom Hanks.
Since that day, I have admired you deeply. Your talent, your sensitivity, your ability to portray such rich and deeply human characters inspired me in ways I never could have imagined. It’s thanks to you that I wanted to become a director—to write stories and, one day, bring them to the screen.
My grandfather, a passionate film lover, introduced me to a dozen of your films. He is a great admirer of your work, and I am infinitely grateful to him for giving me this "meeting" with you through cinema. My father also shares that admiration. Every year, we watch Saving Private Ryan together, and of course, our favorite series: Band of Brothers. You represent a strong family bond, a guiding presence in our lives.
Cinema wouldn’t have been the same without you. Thank you for your voice in Toy Story, which was such a comforting part of my childhood. Thank you for all the roles I hold so dearly in my heart. You were there during my early years, and you continue to light my way as an adult.
I dream of directing films, and also documentaries. I’m convinced those dreams will one day come true—and the reason I still believe so strongly is because you showed me that sincerity, passion, and humanity can reach millions.
I feel a bit like Forrest. I’m “different” too. My childhood wasn’t easy—there was violence, judgment, and loneliness. But like him, I learned that difference can become strength. And today, despite the scars, I’m building my path and following my dreams with determination.
So simply… thank you.
Thank you for existing. Thank you for your many faces, your kindness, your art.
Thank you for shaping my childhood—and for continuing to guide me through my adult life.
With all my love and gratitude,
Emma
